These quaint little
decorations, known as "putz houses" or "putzes", were
found on tables, mantles and under Christmas trees in homes
across America for many decades starting around the early 1900's. Popular from 1928 through the 1950s. Also known as Glitter Houses,
Christmas Villages, Christmas Gardens and Train Garden. The
term was derived from the German verb putzen, which means "to
clean" or "to decorate."
Although initially placed beneath the Christmas tree, by the early 19th century a family's
"putz" might have also been found on the fireplace mantel, side tables, and other prominent places within the home. The story seems to be that, in
Germany, families would create little holiday scenes — often nativity scenes
— in their homes to celebrate Christmas. They
would collect the bits and pieces for their tableaus for weeks… hence putzen=”decorate” became
putzing=”taking your time to decorate” became putzen=”taking your grand
ole time”.

Disclaimer: Pinterest
is a great place to find inspiration but not all pins lead to blogs. I
tried to only pick those ideas that I could find the original creator
and give credit to. Please take a moment and check out these great blogs
because without them I wouldn't have content to talk about on the new
My Craft Channel show Inspired by Pinterest.
